While it would be nice to think that our government would do the absolute best it can to protect the health and safety of its citizens, it turns out that they often don't.
There appear to be other influences at work. Perhaps there are vested interests, financial interests who want certain things to go unstudied, or want studies watered down so their conclusions don't cause any expense. In the wake of the Abramoff scandal, one suspects that perhaps the golden rule is driving government policy, in the sciences and elsewhere: "He who has the gold, makes the rules."
So, if for whatever reason our government won't pay for or fund serious, scientifically valid investigations of the health issues surrounding nuclear power, what can we do? We have to study matters ourselves, a process we call "Citizen Epidemiology".
