In countries that have many viable sources or potential sources to supply themselves with energy, choosing nuclear energy is cause for great concern. At NEIS we don't talk that much about the connection between nuclear energy and nuclear weapons but it is a reality. Nuclear reactors for 'energy' were encouraged to create the materials needed to build more bombs. Energy was a byproduct. We do not support encouraging other countries using nuclear energy no matter which country would get the contract to build it for them.
Besides the Three Mile Island Nuclear Energy Facility announcing it will shutdown this month the only nuclear energy facility in Iowa also announced it will shutdown. The Duane Arnold Nuclear Energy facility in Palo Iowa and owned by NextEra Energy will close forever.
Why? Among a number of factors a big part of the reason is Iowa doesn’t need nuclear energy because they have built out so much renewable energy. Let that be a lesson to other states that are still using old nuclear facilities. The Iowa nuclear reactor is 45 years old! Smart to plan ahead, build renewables and shut it down.
Shutting the facility early eliminates the production of another five years of nuclear waste. Adding that to the 15 years worth that will not be produced at Three Mile Island. That is 20 years of waste avoided!
Illinois, USA 100% energy production to 0% energy production The Dresden, Unit 2 reactor went into an automatic SCRAM, which is the nuclear energy version of slamming on the breaks, inserting all the control rods to stop the nuclear reaction. It’s status is now in “Hot Shutdown” and is not generating any electricity. The fuels remains in the nuclear reactor while the operator investigates the problem that caused the system to automatically shut itself down. “AUTOMATIC REACTOR SCRAM DUE TO TURBINE TRIP”
