SUMMARY:JUNE NIGHT WITH THE EXPERTS: Why Are We Still Going Nuclear? -- with Alfred Meyer
DESCRIPTION:You’re Invited to\nA Night with the Experts\nFeaturing: \nAlfred Meyer\nSocial Activist\nSpeaking on\nWhy Are We Still Going Nuclear?\nThursday\, June 29\, 2023\n7pm Central Time (8pm ET\, 6pm MT\, 5pm PT) UTC -5\nRegistration for the Zoom Link is required: click here \nAfter 78 years under the mushroom cloud threat of nuclear weapons to end human life on earth\, the United States of America\, which now spends more on annual military expenditures than the combined expenditures of the next eight world militaries combined\, still maintains nuclear weapons as the dominant centerpiece of our national “security” strategy. \nDoes this really make us safe and secure? Or would joining the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) provide greater security and safety? \nThe vast military/industrial/academic/congressional infrastructure needed for the nuclear enterprise to continue developing and producing new nuclear weapons and reactors for the nuclear Navy is driving the current international nuclear arms race. Civilian nuclear power is an “essential enabler” of U.S. nuclear weapons and our nuclear-powered navy. \nIf we want to eliminate the existential threats posed by the nuclear enterprise\, we need to understand the fundamental drivers behind it\, currently being expressed by the well-coordinated promotion of Small Modular Nuclear Reactors. This understanding is essential for influencing the trajectory of new nuclear development—our future hangs in the balance. \nAlfred Meyer is a social activist who has worked with a number of non-profit organizations addressing various aspects of the nuclear enterprise and its threats to life on earth. They include Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) in Wisconsin\, Washington DC\, and New York\, the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability and Peace Action in Washington DC\, the Manhattan Project for a Nuclear Free World in New York City and Friends of Chernobyl Centers United States in Madison\, Wisconsin. \nMore recently\, Mr. Meyer has written several articles for The Progressive magazine: \nIt’s All About the Bomb \n‘F’ Is for Failure

SUMMARY:MEME THE MEDIA -- an action meeting (registration required)
DESCRIPTION:NEIS announces the official roll-out of the “Meme the Media” project — the last Monday of each month\, which will become the permanent day for future sessions. \nThe purpose of MtM is for the safe-energy/anti-nuclear movement to reclaim the media messaging on nuclear issues.  We will put out OUR memes\, in OUR language; and we will confront greenwashing\, linguistic detoxification\, and other glaring media misrepresentations of nuclear power in the media of all forms — MSM\, online\, social media (Facebook\, Twitter\, TikTok etc.)\, YouTube comments\, etc. \nSessions will be conducted on ZOOM\, and will occur on the last Monday of each month at 7 p.m. Central time.  You will be required to REGISTER for each session using this link. \nAt each session\, we will: \n\ntarget 1 or 2 current egregious media misrepresentations found in print or electronic media that need “correcting”\nin small groups using “breakout rooms”\, we will develop short\, pithy\, informative responses/corrections/critiques of the identified media targets.\nback in the full group\, we will review these\, and then post/send them immediately to the targeted media source\nNEIS will provide the following:\n\n\n\n\n1-2 media “targets” or time-sensitive issues needing to be addressed; alternatively —  you can come with one you have seen in the media that you want to address (you will need to research and bring with you all the contact links and information if you choose this option)\ninformation on the ways to contact that media source (e.g.\, criteria for letters-to-the-editors; links to “comments” sections\, let-eds\, e-mails of reporters\, etc.)\nshort\, bullet-point phrases and alternative memes on the identified issue/target that you can use; or\, to be modified in your own language in your small working group\n\n\n\nThe sessions will follow this format: \n\npresentation of the selected topic — a short briefing on the issue\, and then identification of the media target(s) for the evening\nbreak out sessions of 2-3 individuals\, tasked with writing up the response(s)\nreassemble to go over the draft products as a group\, make corrections\, take suggestions for re-writes\nsend the responses IMMEDIATELY\n\nIf you are sick and tired of nuclear being described as “clean\, green and emissions-free\,” or Jennifer Granholm running around the country gushing about the need for small modular nuclear reactors\, or Bill Gates’ new whizz-bang reactor that eats radioactive waste while whitening your teeth — then THIS project is for you!  As the old activist saying goes:  Don’t get angry.  Get EVEN!

SUMMARY:NEIS ACTION ALERT Major actions next two weeks -- you’re invited for COVID-safe participation!
DESCRIPTION:NEIS ACTION ALERT \nMajor actions next two weeks — you’re invited for COVID-safe participation! \nGreetings All – \nThis week\, on Friday January 22\, the international Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons  (TPNW) goes into LEGALLY BINDING effect that prohibits the use\, manufacture\, possession and sharing of nuclear weapons.  This is a major international milestone in ending our march towards Armageddon. \nTo mark this historic moment\, NEIS invites you to a series of events and actions: \nTPNW Webinar\, and Nukes Banned!-Car Caravan for Peace:\n\nZOOM Panel of Experts\, Thursday\, January 21\, 6 p.m. CTZ;  ZOOM registration link here\n\nJoin this group of nuclear weapons experts on Zoom to learn more about the significance of the Ban Treaty entering into force\, and what the United States can do to move toward nuclear weapons abolition. \n  \nPanelists include: \n\nLauraGrego\,PhD\, Senior Scientist\, Global Security Program\, Union of Concerned Scientists\nTaraDrozdenko\, PhD\, Acting Executive Director\, Outrider Foundation\nDoug Shaw\,PhD\, Consultant\, Nuclear Disarmament and Pentagon Spending\, Friends Committee on National Legislation\nPanel moderator: Rachel Bronson\, PhD\, President and CEO\, Bulletin of Atomic Scientists\n\n  \n\nNukes Banned! Car Caravan for Peace\, Friday\, January 22\, 12 noon- 1:00 p.m.\, car caravan for peace circles Federal Plaza in Chicago (Clark and Dearborn Streets\, downtown Chicago).\nVolunteer drivers are needed for the car caravan. 100% COVID-safe\, since no one will have to leave their cars.  Rendezvous to get signage at 11 a.m.  Ten more drivers needed!\nSign-up for the caravan (details will be sent to you after you register)\nFacebook event \n\n  \nNight with the Experts:  The Weapons/Reactor Connections:\nThe next installment of this increasingly popular monthly series will connect the dots that exist between the so-called “Peaceful Atom” and nuclear weapons: \nNuclear Power and Weapons – The Connections \nThursday\, January 28\, 2021\,  7 p.m. CTZ \nZOOM link:  click here to join the session (use a computer with camera and microphone for best experience.  You do not need to have ZOOM installed on your device to participate.) \nDr. Arjun Makhijani \nDirector\,  Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER)\, Takoma Park\, MD. \nOn January 22\, the International Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons will come into full force\, having been ratified now by 51 parties of the 86 sovereign signatories to the treaty. This is the most important international agreement on nuclear weapons since the Non -Proliferation Treaty came into force in 1970\, a treaty that the United States was instrumental in bringing to fruition.  What people and governments constantly overlook is that nuclear weapons programs often come from nuclear power programs around the world – linking the two inextricably. \nDr. Makhijani is an engineer\, physicist and noted national energy expert.  He is author of the 2007 book\, Carbon Free – Nuclear Free: A Roadmap for U.S. Energy Policy (available in PDF online here)\, which predates the Green New Deal in any form by nearly a decade.  The Renewable Maryland Project updates this work comprehensively\, including all aspects of the energy transition from hour-by-hour modeling to energy equity and a just transition for fossil fuel workers.  He has written extensively on the issues of disarmament and nonproliferation. \n  \n

SUMMARY:NEIS “Night with the Experts” Returns! -- Nuclear Power as an Environmental Justice Issue
DESCRIPTION:NEIS would like to invite you to the second installment of our newly reconstituted online program  —  Night with the Experts. \nIn August our selected expert will discuss: \nNuclear Power as an Environmental Justice Issue\nThursday\, August 27\,  7 p.m. \nZOOM link:  click here to join the session (use a computer with camera and microphone for best experience) \nOur guest expert this month is Diné activist : \nLeona Morgan\nDirector\, Diné No Nukes \nNuclear Issues Study Group\, based at Univ. of New Mexico \n \nLeona has long-standing expertise and firsthand experience with uranium mining issues on Indigenous lands worldwide; has presented on Indigenous rights issues at COP-24; and is the co-founder of the Radiation Monitoring Project\, providing radiation monitors and professional training on their use to frontline contaminated communities.  She is currently involved in a national organizing effort to prevent the construction “centralized interim storage” dumps for high-level radioactive wastes in southeast New Mexico and West Texas.  Indigenous lands and impoverished tribes are routinely targeted by the U.S. Dept. of Energy and the nuclear industry to serve as dump communities for this deadly waste. The Diné Reservation in New Mexico is also the site of the largest human-made spill of radioactive material in the history of North America\, the Church Rock mill tailings spill into the Puerco River\, July 16\, 1979. \nHow “Night with the Experts” Works: \nWith most webinars\, especially online\, speakers talk for the majority of the time\, often leaving little time for detailed questions or genuine discussion.  With NWTE\, we reverse that format.  The guest expert(s) will be given about 10 minutes to introduce their information on the topic.  Then\, the remainder of the time will be given to the watching/listening participants to ask questions and engage in moderated discussion.  Participants will indicate in the ZOOM “Chat Box” their wish to speak or ask a question\, and will be acknowledged in the order received. \nNEIS will conduct the series at 7 p.m. on the last Thursday of each month\, so mark your calendar.  Next Up:  “Nuclear Power in a COVID World\,” our experts TBD; Thursday\, September 24th\, 7 p.m. Central TZ.  Hope to see you at both of these events!

SUMMARY:Congressional Briefing: “Decommissioning Nuclear Power Plants: What Congress\, Federal Agencies and Communities Need to Know”
DESCRIPTION:Live webcast will be streamed at: www.eesi.org/livecast \nContact: Dave Kraft\, Director\, Nuclear Energy Information Service (NEIS)\, (773)342-7650 (o); neis@neis.org \nAmaury Laporte\, Environmental and Energy Study Institute\, (202) 662-1884 alaporte@eesi.org \nSPEAKERS: \n\nMayor Al Hill\, of Zion\, Illinois\, home of the decommissioned Zion Nuclear Power Station\nRobert Alvarez\, Senior Scholar\, Institute for Policy Studies; former Department of Energy Senior Policy Advisor to the Secretary and Deputy Assistant Secretary for National Security and the Environment\nGeoffrey H. Fettus\, Senior Attorney for Energy & Transportation\, Natural Resources Defense Council\nKevin Kamps\, Radioactive Waste Specialist\, Beyond Nuclear\nBob Musil (moderator)\, President and CEO of the Rachel Carson Council; former Executive Director\, Physicians for Social Responsibility\n\nWHAT: \nIllinois has more reactors (14) and high-level radioactive waste (>10\,000 tons) than any other state. As the Nuclear Age draws to a close and we enter the Age of Decommissioning\, we find huge technical misunderstanding and regulatory inadequacies about what constitutes environmentally responsible action to dismantle these inevitably closing reactors\, and deal with the radioactive waste storage\, transport and disposal problems they leave as their legacy. The Illinois community of Zion has already experienced firsthand the devastating effects of decommissioning done wrong or thoughtlessly. \nThe Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) invites you to a briefing on the urgent need to safely decommission nuclear power plants\, which are increasingly shutting down. The United States is facing a significant wave of nuclear plant closures for which it is unprepared. Most of the existing U.S. reactor fleet will inevitably close over the next two decades\, as plants near the ends of their operational lifespans. Decommissioning is the process of dismantling the closed plant and securing or removing radioactive waste while lowering the site’s residual radioactivity to safer levels. Getting decommissioning right is critical to communities’ health and safety\, while getting it wrong could pose an existential threat. \n  \nLeading scientists\, policy experts\, NGO advocates\, and local elected officials with experience of decommissioning will speak at the briefing. It will cover the impacts of decommissioning\, current decommissioning options\, waste storage vs. transport\, thorny unsolved problems and best practices\, financing and liability\, a just transition for communities and workers\, how communities and states can and can’t weigh in on these issues\, and how they should inform the fast-changing legislative and regulatory landscape. \n  \nThis briefing is co-sponsored by Beyond Nuclear\, Ecological Options Network\, Hudson River Sloop Clearwater\, Indian Point Safe Energy Coalition (IPSEC)\, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)\, Nuclear Energy Information Service (NEIS)\, Nuclear Resource and Information Service (NIRS)\, Riverkeeper\, Safe Energy Rights Group\, Unity for Clean Energy (U4CE)\, and others. \nContact Amaury Laporte at alaporte@eesi.org\, (202) 662-1884 \n** NEIS was founded in 1981 to provide the public with credible information on the hazards of nuclear power\, waste\, and radiation; and information about the viable energy alternatives to nuclear power. SUMMARY:New Nuclear Dumps-Voices from Texas and New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:This session will get into the details of what’s wrong with Congress’ 2018 plans for dealing with high-level radioactive wastes\, drawing on the expertise of the frontline locals who will be directly affected by these deficient plans to dump waste in poor communities\, revive the flawed Yucca Mt. project\, and transport up to 12\,000 rail shipments of high-level radioactive wastes through our communities. (Think: “radioactive oil trains”)\nWe hope you will be able to attend this briefing in preps to doing battle with Congress this year.\n\n\n\n.
