After 78 years under the mushroom cloud threat of nuclear weapons to end human life on earth, the United States of America, which now spends more on annual military expenditures than the combined expenditures of the next eight world militaries combined, still maintains nuclear weapons as the dominant centerpiece of our national “security” strategy.
Does this really make us safe and secure? Or would joining the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) provide greater security and safety?
The vast military/industrial/academic/congressional infrastructure needed for the nuclear enterprise to continue developing and producing new nuclear weapons and reactors for the nuclear Navy is driving the current international nuclear arms race. Civilian nuclear power is an “essential enabler” of U.S. nuclear weapons and our nuclear-powered navy.
If we want to eliminate the existential threats posed by the nuclear enterprise, we need to understand the fundamental drivers behind it, currently being expressed by the well-coordinated promotion of Small Modular Nuclear Reactors. This understanding is essential for influencing the trajectory of new nuclear development—our future hangs in the balance.
Alfred Meyer is a social activist who has worked with a number of non-profit organizations addressing various aspects of the nuclear enterprise and its threats to life on earth. They include Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) in Wisconsin, Washington DC, and New York, the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability and Peace Action in Washington DC, the Manhattan Project for a Nuclear Free World in New York City and Friends of Chernobyl Centers United States in Madison, Wisconsin.
