Background:
- The Veterans for Peace ketch Golden Rulehas been touring the Great Lakes for the past 5 months, sailing nearly 11,000 miles and stopping at just under 100 ports of call, 20 on the Great Lakes, to further public discussion of peace and nuclear abolition. Given current international events and the interest in the Oppenheimer movie, these messages are more important than ever for the public to hear and participate in, and policy makers to pay greater attention to.
- The visit of the Golden Rule comes at a moment when the world once again faces numerous nuclear threats from nuclear weapons and power. To raise awareness of these dangers and to build support for a nuclear-free future, a coalition of numerous Chicago-area peace and justice, environmental, anti-war and environmental justice organizations have collaborated with Veterans for Peace to schedule a series of events and interviews to be held throughout the Chicago area from Sept. 13-18.
- One Tuesday, Sept. 19th, the Golden Rule will be taken out of the water, and begin a cross-country journey to the West Coast by land – where it will be made ready for its next sailing campaign for peace.
